The Homestead Masonic Hall Lofts is one of Homestead’s first market-rate, multi-family developments in decades. This historic structure was originally built in 1917 by established freemasons. In late 2017, this mostly vacant civic building was repurposed into 20 apartment units with a mix of 13 one-bedroom units, 2 live/work studios, 4 studio apartments, and 1 studio loft.
Throughout the exterior, historic window profiles were recreated, and the building’s array of buff yellow masonry and brickwork, and signature patterns of the freemasons, were restored. Inside, the design incorporates original details like the special diamond-pattern floor tiles, unique to masonic halls. At the former great hall on the third floor, a wall was inserted through the length of the building as an efficient way to create two 1,400 SF loft style apartments, preserving the 18-foot ceilings and expansive feel of the original hall. A balcony overlooking the ballroom on the fourth floor, hidden by a drop ceiling, was also restored and is visible from the common corridor. Several of the fourth-floor apartments utilize the available height between the roof trusses to accommodate bedroom lofts.
