East End Cooperative Ministry-Community House

The building, to be called Community House, will house 15 programs sponsored by the East End Cooperative Ministry. The building will feature a central courtyard, terraces, and a greenhouse, kitchen and dining facilities, 16 shared-suite homeless residence center for men and women, a chapel, a respite care facility, an informal café, administrative offices, and multi-purpose classroom, assembly rooms and small meeting rooms. The building is designed as LEED Platinum. The HVAC system is a water source heat pump utilizing 40 geothermal wells. The structure is a combination of masonry bearing and structural steel with precast plank, two stories with a partial basement. Its programs include a soup kitchen, Pittsburgh's largest food pantry and a Meals on Wheels program. About 50 paid employees work there along with hundreds of volunteers.
